MEDICAL TERMS FOR CHAPTER ONE

  1. ADENOMA – Tumor (oma) of a gland (aden/o).
  2. ADENITIS – inflammation (-itis) of a gland (aden/o).
  3. ARTHRITIS – inflammation (-itis) of a joint (arthr/o)
  4. BIOLOGY – the study (logy) of life (bi/o) processes (-y).
  5. BIOPSY – the process (-y) of viewing (opsy) living (bi/o) tissue.
  6. CARCINOMA – a cancerous (carcin/o) tumor (oma).
  7. CARDIOLOGY – the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of the heart (cardi/o).
  8. CEPHALIC – pertaining to (ic) the head (cephal/o).
  9. CEREBRAL – pertaining to (al) the cerebrum (cerebr/o), the largest part of the brain.
  10. INCISION – the process (-ion) of cutting (cis) into (in-).
  11. EXCISION – the process (-ion) of cutting (cis) out (ex-)
  12. ENDOCRINE GLANDS – are glands that secrete (crin/o) hormones within (endo-) the bloodstream.
  13. CYSTOSCOPY – the process of (-y) visually examining (scop) a sac or cyst containing fluid (cyst/o), such as the urinary bladder.
  14. CYTOLOGY – the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of a cell (cyt/o).
  15. DERMATITIS – inflammation of (-itis) the skin (derm/o).
  16. HYPODERMIC - Under or below (hypo-) the skin (derm/o).
  17. ELECTROCARDIOGRAM - record (-gram) of the electrical (electr/o) activity of the heart (cardi/o).
  18. ELECTROENCEHPALOGRAM - record (-gram) of the electrical activity (electr/o) of the brain (encephal/o).
  19. ENTERITIS - inflammation of (-itis) the intestines (usually small intestines) (enter/o).
  20. ERYTHROCYTE - red (erythr/o) cell (cyte). Specifically refers to red blood cells.
  21. GASTRECTOMY - the excision or removal (-ectomy) of all, or more likely part of the stomach (gastr/o).
  22. HYPERGLYCEMIA - excessive or higher than normal (hyper-) sugar (glyc/o) condition of the blood (-emia).
  23. GASTROTOMY - the process of (-y) cutting (-tom) the stomach (gastr/o).
  24. DIAGNOSIS - the state or condition (-sis) of complete (dia-) knowledge (gnos/o).  A diagnosis is given after all presenting symptoms are considered in order to define a plan of care.
  25. PROGNOSIS - the state or condition (-sis) of knowledge (gnos/o) or an informed prediction.  Based on a diagnosis the physician can give a prognosis defining parameters to the patient’s expectations including best case scenarios and worst case scenarios.
  26. GYNECOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of woman or females (gynec/o).
  27. HEMATOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of blood (hemat/o).
  28. HEMATOMA - a mass or collection of (cells) (-oma) blood (hem/o).
  29. HEMOGLOBIN - the protein (-globin) in blood (hem/o) literally, but more exactly it is the receptor protein which carries oxygen in blood cells.
  30. HEPATITIS - inflammation (-itis) of the liver (hepat/o).
  31. IATROGENIC - resultant factors pertaining to or produced by (-genic) treatment or a physician (iatr/o).
  32. LEUKOCYTE - white (leuk/o) cell (-cyte).  Usually refers to white blood cells.
  33. DERMATOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of the skin (derm/o)
  34. NEPHRITIS - inflammation (-itis) of the kidneys (nephr/o).
  35. NEPHROLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of the kidney(s) (nephr/o).
  36. NEUROLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of nerves (neur/o).
  37. ONCOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of tumors (onc/o).
  38. ONCOLOGIST - one who specializes in the field (-ist) of tumors (onc/o).
  39. OPHTHALMOSCOPE - an instrument for visual examination (-scope) of the eye (ophthalm/o).
  40. OSTEITIS - inflammation (-itis) of bone (oste/o).
  41. OSTEOARTHRITIS - inflammation (-itis) of the bone (oste/o) and joint (arthr/o).
  42. PATHOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of disease (path/o).
  43. PATHOLOGIST - one who specializes in the field (-ist) of disease (path/o), especially in determining the cause of death.
  44. PEDIATRIC - treatment (iatr/o) pertaining to (-ic) children (ped/o).
  45. PSYCHOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of the mind (psych/o).
  46. PSYCHIATRIST - specialist (-ist) in the treatment (iatr/o) of the mind (psych/o).
  47. RADIOLOGY - the process of (-y) the study of (logy) x-rays (radi/o).
  48. RENAL - pertaining to (-al) the kidneys (ren/o).
  49. RHINITIS - inflammation (-itis) of the nose (rhin/o).
  50. SARCOMA - tumor, mass, or swelling (-oma) of the flesh (sarc/o).
  51. RESECTION - the process (-ion) of cutting (sect-) back (re-).
  52. THROMBOCYTE - the clotting (thromb/o) cells (-cyte) or platelets.
  53. UROLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of urine or the urinary tract.
  54. CARDIAC - pertaining to (-ic) the heart (cardi/o).
  55. NEURAL - pertaining to (-al) nerves (neur/o).
  56. ARTHRALGIA - joint (arth-) pain (-algia).
  57. NEURALGIA - nerve (neur/o) pain (-algia).
  58. ERYTHROCYTE - red (erythr/o) cell (-cyte). Erythrocytes carry oxygen in the blood.
  59. NEPHRECTOMY - excision or removal (-ectomy) of a kidney (nephr/o).
  60. LEUKEMIA - white (leuk/o) blood condition (-emia); condition where cancerous white blood cells proliferate indefinitely.
  61. CARCINOGENIC - pertaining to or causing (producing) (-genic) cancer (carcin/o).
  62. PATHOGENIC - pertaining to or causing (producing) (-genic) disease(s) (path/o).
  63. IATROGENIC - pertaining to or produced by (-genic) treatment or the physician (iatr/o).
  64. GASTRIC - pertaining to (-ic) the stomach (gastr/o).
  65. NEUROLOGICAL - pertaining to (-ical) the study of (log-) nerves (neur/o).
  66. EXCISION - the process (-ion) of cutting (cis/o) out (ex-).
  67. OPHTHALMOLOGIST - specialist (-ist) who studies or examines (log-) the eye (opthalm/o).
  68. CYSTITIS - inflammation of (-itis) a fluid filled sac containing fluid, as in the urinary bladder (cyst/o).
  69. ENDOCRINOLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y)
  70. HEPATOMA - tumor or mass (-oma) of/in the liver (hepat/o).
  71. NEPHROSIS - condition (especially an increase in some factor concerning) (-osis) the kidney (nephr/o).
  72. LEUKOCYTOSIS - condition (especially an increase in some factor concerning) (-osis) white (leuk/o) cells (cyte). Specifically used to refer to an elevated level of white blood cells.
  73. ENTEROPATHY - the process (-y) of disease (path/o) affecting the intestines (enter/o).
  74. ADENOPATHY - the process (-y) of disease (path/o) affecting glands (anden/o).
  75. ENDOSCOPE - an instrument to visually examine (-scope) within (end/o),
  76. ENDOSCOPY - the process (-y) of visually examining (-scope) within (end/o),
  77. OSTEOTOMY - the process of cutting or making an incision (-tomy), (-y) in bone (oste/o).
  78. GASTROENTEROLOGY - the study (logy) of the processes (-y) of the stomach (gastr/o).
  79. ANEMIA - a blood condition (-emia) lacking or without (an-) a component that is normally present. Anemia usually refers to a decreased number of erythrocytes and reduced delivery of oxygen.
  80. AUTOPSY - the process of viewing (-opsy) by oneself (aut/o).
  81. ENDOCRINOLOGIST - a specialist (-ist) in the study (logy) of glands and their secretions (crin/o) within (endo-) the blood stream.
  82. EPIGASTRIC - pertaining to (-ic) above (epi-) the stomach (gastr/o).
  83. EPIDERMIS - upon or above (epi-) the skin or dermis (derm/o).  The outer most layer of skin.
  84. EXOCRINE GLANDS - Glands that secrete (crin/o) to the outside (exo-) of the body via tubes, ducts or other channels.
  85. HYPERTHYROIDISM - the process or condition (-ism) causing excessive, or above normal (hyper-) as in hyperactivity of the thyroid gland.
  86. HYPERGLYCEMIA - a blood condition (-emia) of excessive (hyper-) sugar (glyc/o).
  87. HYPOGASTRIC - pertaining to (-ic) below (hypo-) the stomach (gastr/o).
  88. INCISION - the process (-ion) of cutting (cis/o) into (in-).
  89. HYPOGLYCEMIA - a blood condition (-emia) of below normal (hypo-) sugar (glyc/o).
  90. PERICARDIUM - a structure (-um) surrounding (peri-) the heart (cardi/o).  The pericardium is the membrane surrounding the heart.
  91. PROSTATE GLAND - the gland that stands (-state) in front of (before or forwrad of) (pro-) the urinary bladder.
  92. RESECTION - the process of (-ion) cutting (-sect) back (re-).
  93. RETROCARDIAC - pertaining to (-ac) behind (retro-) the heart (cardi/o).
  94. SUBHEPATIC - pertaining to (-ic) below or under (sub-) the liver (hepat/o).
  95. TRANSHEPATIC - pertaining to (-ic) across or through (trans-) the liver (hepat/o).
